Paper Mannequin and Torso
In the past, mannequins and torso, which are manufactured to wear, were made of paper, but since the 1960s, plastic has become the norm. Today, more than 100,000 mannequins are made in Japan every year, but they are disposed of as industrial waste after use. We have incorporated traditional methods for making daruma, dolls affectionately thought of as lucky charms in Japan since ancient times, to manufacture mannequins made of paper. There are two manufacturing methods for paper mannequins and torso. One is a “hand-pasting type” in which recycled paper softened with water is pasted with rice glue, and the other is a “vacuum forming method” in which a wooden box is submerged in a water tank in which used paper pulp is melted and sucked. These manufacturing products give a friendly impression with the warmth of human hands. We were able to achieve both inheritance of traditional craft manufacturing methods and reduction of adverse effects on the environment. With the growing interest in the plastic problem in recent years, these exceedingly rare paper mannequins and torso are gathering attention and are receiving more and more inquiries.
