BOTLTO K.K. is a tech company with a mission to reduce single-use plastic waste in the form of PET bottles. Around 22.7 billion PET bottle products are shipped every year in Japan, averaging out to around 180 bottles per person. It might seem like a small drop in the ocean (of plastic) but the small act of using your own bottle will contribute to the groundswell of awareness to make a change. Simply put, BOTLTO makes it easy for you to buy ‘just the drink’ – you supply the vessel. After downloading the app (available on iOS and Android), you can find shops near your location (via GPS location service) on the map. Tap the shop you like and view their menu of drinks. From there you can prepurchase via the app, take your bottle to the shop and have them fill it with your desired beverage. There are other existing apps in the marketplace that encourage users to refill their bottles with ‘free’ water stations at participating shops. The BOTLTO app is different because it is an e-commerce platform that provides incentives for both users and business owners to make a social change. A unique feature of the app is that it records the number of plastic bottles reduced per drink purchased, giving you a scoreboard of your actions to reduce plastic bottles. It also enables shop owners to show their advocacy for sustainable business practices and attract a new sales channel of eco-conscious customers. Businesses can not only sell existing drinks but new products specially designed for reusable bottles. For shops particularly reliant on single-use takeaway cups, this is a great way to reduce both costs and waste. The app is currently bilingual in Japanese and English, with the vision to deploy in other markets outside of Japan. This is a service that “connects shops, bottles and people”, aiming to encourage environmental action by society as a whole.
